Crazy three days of Fishing

Posted by mvetack on July 26, 2010

It has been a while since I have posted anything on Joxygen.  Part of it was laziness and more of it was because of a quick Fishing trip I was fortunate enough to get invited to.

The basics of the trip was a group of writers and fishing folk were invited to attend the Pride on the Line 2010 Mahi Mahi Fishing Tournament hosted by Maui Jim sunglasses at Hawks Cay resort in Duck Key, Florida.  The plane tickets, shuttle to and from the airport, hotel room, Luau, food, drinks, chartered fishing trip, were all paid for.  And of course we got some nice SWAG and our choice of Maui Jim sunglasses.  Most people flew in, for free!, at some point on Wednesday, stayed the night, got up early for 6 hours of fishing, then headed home Thursday afternoon.  We were gone before we realized we got there.

So flashback to Wednesday morning.  Flying out of Manchester, NH I woke up at 4 o’clock after failing to sleep until midnight that night.  My plane left at the early hour of 7 in the morning.  I had the aisle seat next to a pretty cool guy that read for most of the flight so I did not get to talk to him too much.  Now the aisle seat is no window seat let me tell you.  Especially for someone that needs their leg room like myself.  Now you would think the aisle seat would be nice, hang your legs out in the aisle and take a long nap.  No, this is not the case.  First off the second you swing your legs over to the aisle someone needs the bathroom or the cart comes by.  Forget sleeping because you will be woken up non stop for you to move your legs.  Anyway the flight was not too bad, just an hour long and I was in Philly.

Luckily while in Philly no one in a Phillies hat threw up on me so it was already a good stop for me.  From Philly it was off to Miami on a three hour flight.  I got the window seat this time around and found a comfortable enough spot to get some rest.  The spot next to me was open which gave me even more room to lay out.  The flight to Miami went relatively well.  When I landed the Maui Jim rep was there to give me and two other guys a ride to the beautiful resort Hawks Cay.  This ride was a nice long 2 hour drive across the Keys to Duck Key.  We finally arrived around 4:30 to check in.  At this point it is an understatement to say that I was a little tired.  Working on just 4 hours of sleep and add two flights and a 2 hour car drive, and you got yourself a tired fisherman.

With an hour and a half of free time until the Luau, I took to wondering the resort in search for activities.  Have you ever seen the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall?  Because that is exactly how I felt even for just one hour or so by myself in my new tropical paradise.  I was in such a great and fantastic place but I was all alone.  I quickly checked out a Dolphin show from a distance and moved on to taking a quick dip in the Salt Water Lagoon.

By the time the Luau came around I had met my roommate for the night and luckily, in a tournament full of 30-40 year old guys, this kid was 25 and only 2 years older than me.  Before the Luau we got to pick out our sweet new Maui Jims ( I got this pair http://tinyurl.com/33br6ww).  The Luau was pretty sweet.  Besides it being extremely windy, tropical storm Bonnie was stirring up, the food was great and conversation even better.  After hours of talking we moved on to the hot tub for a brief time with anyone under 30 years old.  By the time I got to bed it was 12:30 with the wake up call from downstairs coming at 5:30.  And let me tell you, that wake up call came waaaaay to quick.  So for those who like math, since waking for the flight from home, I had collected 9.5 hours of sleep.

The morning of the big tournament came with question marks.  At breakfast at the Marina, which was greasy and filling as possible, the five captains of the five different boats were deciding whether to weather the  possible storm and head out on the Atlantic side of the Keys for Mahi Mahi or stay in the safer Gulf and fish for a variety of fish. With half captians going for Mahi and half not the tournament was changed to biggest of any fish takes home the trip to Hawaii. Oh yea I forgot to tell you the winner gets a trip to Hawaii.

Unluckily I ended up on a boat that was staying in the Gulf fishing for the small guys.  This did not seem too bad at first but by the end of the tournament it turned out to be awful.  We were the first boat to pull in to the marina and we pulled in with just one fish caught by one dude on our boat that was probably about 1 to 2 pounds.  So I traveled all the way from New Hampshire to get skunked. AHHHH.  As every other boat pulled up to the docks, very large fish came along too.  The winning fish was 39 pounds and was a very nice fish to look at.  So after the disappointing fishing tournament and just 9.5 hours of sleep over the last two days I was ready to get home and fall to sleep.  All and all the trip was fantastic and I was very glad to have experienced it.  I met some real cool people and had a great time.

From the Marina we left on a two hour shuttle, followed by a two hour wait in the Miami airport which by the way no one speaks English, followed by a two hour flight to Charlotte, followed by a one hour wait in the airport, followed by a two hour flight to Manchester.  So it was 12:30 at night and I was really needing some sleep.  Thats when I got the call from my Uncle asking me if I wanted to go Striper Fishing at 3 AM.  So this new trip or day of fishing would be starting with me getting just a one hour nap at home.

Short story for the fishing trip is traveled and fished all day on 10 hours of sleep over 2.5 days, caught 50ish bait fish, got skunked on Striper, saw a whale a couple times, Great white swam by, news crews and helicopters, a little rain, little cousins birthday party after, home at 10 at night. Finally sleep.

SO, that is the loooooooong way of telling you why I have not posted anything for a while.  If you read all of this than I know someone enjoys fishing/traveling.  Normal sports stuff should be up soon.

Votto’s got no love for his All Star Teammate

Posted by mvetack on July 15, 2010

Yea, so what were on the same team for one game.  The Cubs Suck and Marlon Bryd Sucks!  Well those were not the exact words or thoughts of All Star first baseman Joey Votto on Tuesday night, but they might as well have been.  In a world of Red Sox (Ortiz) receiving Home Run Derby pitching from a Yankee and Dodgers smiling and high-fiving with Giants, it is refreshing to see a guy who knows his rivals and acts like it.

Marlon Byrd made a possible game saving play throwing out Big Papi at second base for the second out of the 9th inning.  He deserved all the credit in the world and got it from just about every one on the team.  Here is what NL teammate Joey Votto had to say about the stinkin Cubbie making such a good play.

Via ESPN (found on thebigleaguestew.com)

“I don’t like the Cubs,” Votto said. “And I’m not going to pat anybody with a Cubs uniform on the back. But because he made that really cool play, it turned out to be a really cool experience. I’m really glad we got the win today.”

Votto was obviously glad to see his rival make such a “cool” play but that doesn’t mean hes gotta show him some love.  Votto is really making it harder and harder for me to keep him from climbing on my ‘New favorite player’ meter.

Joxygen’s Unorganized All Star weekend thought #53 back in February

Posted by mvetack on July 9, 2010

“53. Dwyane Wade really needs to get on a team or add some more play makers besides Beasley.  He looked so much more at ease on the court Sunday night.”

So now we will see that Wade should be argued as the best player in the NBA alongside Kobe Bryant.
